What’s a bang? What about this bang in particular?
A bang is a collaboration between a writer and an artist.
This event will feature both a bang and a reverse bang, which means both writers and artists can submit a slide for claims.
An art slide will feature a draft of the art + information such as what rating the artist is comfortable with, squicks/DNWs, ideas…
A fic slide will feature a summary of the work + information such as what rating the artist is comfortable with, squicks/DNWs, ideas…Writers will also submit a part of their draft.
Then, claims will happen: participants will have access to the slides, and choose which ones tickle their fancy! An artist will pick fic slides that inspire them to create, a writer will choose art that speaks to their muse, etc. All slides must be Teen rated (blacking out, blurring, etc NSFW parts), but the final works’ ratings will be up to you.
It’s perfectly possible to participate in claims only, or submit a slide and not claim! The two are unrelated, but you can of course do both :D
Artists will create new artwork from the fic, and writers will write a new fic from the art they chose.
After that, there will be a period of time in which the team will collaborate to finish the work as a team.
This bang will also be open to prearranged teams (you have a fandom mate you already know you want to work with? You can be part of this adventure!) All works must be new & never published before, and should be able to work as stand-alones (if they’re part of a series, a reader should be able to enjoy them on their own).
What about length?
Fics should be min 3K, no upper limit.
Art should be one work + one banner/cover (another visual piece, which can be a reworking of the artwork previously mentioned, featuring work title, author, artist, and event link).
What’s the schedule?
Works must be submitted to the collection by July 24th, and posting will start on Harry’s birthday, July 31st!.
How can I participate?
You can participate as a writer &/or artist &/or podficcer, as well as a beta.
No need to sign up specifically as a beta, but participants will have the option of saying that they’d be open to betaing.
What are the art & fic minimum requirements?
Podfic should be at least 3k read.
Writers: 3,000 words, no maximum. It should of course be a work that has never been published before!
Works must be betaed. There will be a list of beta volunteers but if you need a beta, you can also check out this tool!
Artists: one art + 1 cover or banner.
The cover must include: artist’s and author’s names, fic title, and include the event's name. Style and dimensions to be discussed with your partner(s); it's just meant to give something eye-catching and SFW for social media :-) No gore / pr0n on the cover/banner to avoid a Tumblr fit!
All visual art must have a description for accessibility.
What counts as art?
Baby don’t art me, don’t art me, no more…
Art can be: traditional or digital art, manips, gifsets (8 gifs min), knitting, needlework embroidery etc, pottery, calligraphy, vid (1 min 30 minimum), songwriting, fanmixes (playlist of 8 songs min + playlist cover), bookbinding, podfic... No monetized or AI-generated works allowed.
When submitting a slide, writers can say what types of art they’re not comfortable with. Please take that into account!
Are there other Snarry BANG! rules?
Well, it’s a Snarry Bang, so you have to have Severus Snape and Harry Potter somewhere :D
OT+ are allowed, as long as it’s not at the expense of Snarry, and other ships can feature as long as Snarry (or Snarry+) is endgame.
Are there ratings rules, age limits, etc?
Slides must be teen rated, but submitters will be expected to have clear info on the slides about what to expect in the final work (chan/underage, character death, non-con, explicit smut, etc) and of course use the proper tags for the final work. Participants should respect everyone’s boundaries, eg, a claimant should not claim a work that is clearly described as featuring character death or smut and demand that it be changed because they don’t like it, or the opposite. Submitters should also be very clear about what they expect the work to contain. Everything happening post matching will have to be discussed as a team.Inserting art on AO3:
You can use the Rich Text option, click on Insert/Edit Image, and fill in the boxes. Your pic should end in .jpg or another image format, not a link. If you’re posting from discord, remember that you need to click on “open original” under the pic to get the correct link and make sure you have the highest quality pic.
It’s HIGHLY recommended that you use a percentage in the “width” box rather than pixel size; this will ensure your pic always looks good on any screen (it will fill 80%, 40%, etc of the screen, whether a phone, tablet, computer, and whether you’re holding your screen in portrait or landscape mode) instead of making the reader slide left and right to see bits of the pic. 80% for art in landscape format and 40% for art in portrait format is a good starting point that you can adjust from.
To center your pic: click on “html” and not rich text, and insert <center> before <img src=“…> and </center> right after.
Here’s an example:
<center>
<img src=“LINK.png” alt=“DESCRIPTION” width=“80%” />
</center>
Signing up form
Signing up means that you can submit art and/or fic, and that you will have access to claims. You don’t have to claim and you don’t have to submit, but you won’t be able to do any of these unless you sign up!
You can both submit and claim - just remember that the more you commit to, the more art / fic you will have to create ;-)
If you want to claim, but find that nothing tickles your fancy, no hard feelings. Okay, just a leeettle :D
IF YOU SIGN UP AS A FICCER+ARTIST TEAM, no slide needed because you won’t be part of claims.
What should I submit for claims?
(Slide templates or alternatively, if you are not comfortable using slides, you can fill in this form for fic or this one for art.)
Artists: some info (cf slide template or form) + at least a sketch of your main piece, embroidery pattern, etc. Please also send along an image description that I can add as Alt Text on the slideshow! The art can be a finished or mostly finished work, of course! As long as it is new / has never been published online before.
Writers: some info (cf slide template or form) + a separate file (a GDoc link is ok) with your project, outline… and 800 words of your fic (from anywhere in the fic) minimum.
Both types of submissions will have to be clear on your nopes (no smut, no AUs, no fanvids, etc), the expected warnings (character death, internalised homophobia, etc) and tags (trans!Harry, college era, crack…).
The slide may have to be spoilery, but this is to ensure your claimant knows what they’re getting into ;-)
Both types of submissions must be PG13/Teen & up: blur / black out extreme gore, pr0n, etc. This is, of course, only for submissions; the final work can include gore/porn etc as long as it’s properly tagged.
Can I combine this bang with another event like a bingo or an event week?
Yes… as long as the rules and schedules coincide, and as long as it’s not another bang, an exchange, an auction, or a commission.
Do you have something else in mind? send an ask (anon ok) or a DM, or leave a message on the DW blog (anon ok)! This FAQ will be updated after the answer is published.
What about posting?
You will be able to post in the relevant subcollection in the larger dedicated AO3 collection.
The art should be embedded in the fic, but the artist is welcome to also put their work in a separate AO3 work that can be in the collection too. Please use the “inspired by” tool on AO3 so both works are linked.
A post will be made on Tumblr by @snarrybang; it will include the banner/cover, credit team members, give tags/warnings, length, etc following the info given on AO3.
Multichapter fics posted as WIP: please get in touch so we can plan together. The work should be entirely posted by the end of the bang.
There will also be a final recap post.
